Moving the Summit Work Forward

Over 500 people, representing a variety of sectors and interests, and making up more than 20 community teams from around the state, gathered in Lansing on October 20, 2008 to learn from others and share their own expertise in and concern about the educational success of Michigan youth.

The Summit proceedings, including all presentations, materials and links, are all available in the Summit Proceedings section of the site.  This now includes video downloads of the youth panel, the Governor, Dr. Andrew Sum, Karen Pittman and all other sessions.

We are fortunate in Michigan to have an infrastructure of support for moving forward the work of communities at the Summit.  Link to the Partners section of the site to connect with some of the organizations, associations and departments that are working on this issue.  The Michigan Shared Youth Vision Partnership, staffed through our Department of Labor and Economic Growth is the home for post-summit work committees that will focus on networking and communications; resources and technical assistance; and policy change.

Minutes from these committees, as well as a newly formed committee devoted to evaluation, will soon be posted on the site.  This post-Summit work continues to be supported by State Farm and by the C.S. Mott Foundation, in addition to the resources and commitment of the Summit Partners.  America's Promise, the Forum for Youth Investment, the National League of Cities, the National Youth Employment Coalition, and other national partners are also providing technical assistance and support to Summit communities.

If you were not able to attend, but would still like to keep connected to Summit conversations, let Michele Corey know at corey.michele@michiganschildren.org or 517/485-3500.  The Summit is just the first step of many exciting opportunties in Michigan to work together on behalf of our young people.  We can connect you with others in your community who attended the Summit, and can connect you to post-Summit training and networking opportunities available in the coming months through the Michigan Shared Youth Vision Partnership, Michigan's Children, and other Summit partners.

Thanks for all of your hard work on behalf of Michigan youth.
